Tom Ehman   The Sailing Company, publishers of Cruising World and Sailing World, is pleased to present Tom Ehman, Head of External Affairs for BMW Oracle Racing, as the featured speaker for the Sail America Industry Conference Gala Dinner.

America’s Cup 33 is the tenth straight AC campaign for Ehman, a consummate veteran of these yachting affairs. A former collegiate, Sunfish and Flying Scot North American champion, and winner of the 1976 Championship of Champions, he pulled a six-year stint as Executive Director of US Sailing in the early 80's, headed the U.S. delegation to ISAF and served on two Olympic juries during the 90's, and has extensive experience in the commercial side of Formula 1.

Job titles since he got involved with the America's Cup in 1980 range from rules advisor to executive director to his current position, Head of External Affairs for BMW Oracle Racing. Tom is one of the few currently involved in the Cup who has only worked for American campaigns, and is the only person to have worked for all of the "big three" clubs -- NYYC, SDYC and StFYC -- as well as having worked for each of the "three C's" -- Conner, Cayard and Coutts. 20 years ago he was the public face of SDYC's controversial 1988 catamaran defense, and once again finds himself on the pointy end with GGYC's current court challenge of SNG/Alinghi over their alleged "self-dealing".

Ehman grew up working in the sailing industry in Michigan where his family has owned, since 1966, a sailing club/marina and boat sales/chandlery on a small lake outside Ann Arbor. He has been a member of New York YC since 1981, and is a founding member of Gstaad YC (Switzerland) and of Sail Newport.

As a Cup “insider” and someone who has played a significant role in developing the world of professional yacht racing at the highest levels of our sport, Tom is uniquely qualified to share with us the impact of innovation on the America’s Cup and sailboat racing in general.
